Fabric Walkway Covers
Specified as part of the Tesco redevelopment of New Square, West Bromwich, this bespoke fabric walkway covers 29m x 3.2m and is fixed directly to the Odeon cinema building, allowing the space below to be used to its full potential. The New Square development has created a total of 473,000sq ft for leisure and retail arranged in an open-air mall with a range of restaurants and cafés, plus 1,900 surface level parking spaces.
The architect’s preference was for a tenara fabric which offers excellent light transmission. Water management was important to keep shoppers and diners below dry, but without support masts to act as down pipes, the fabric walkway covers would need its gutter incorporated into the drainage system of the new building.
We were able to offer an alternative to the tenara fabric that had the same characteristics for light transmission and longevity, but at a more attractive price. Silicon Glass Weave fabric is exactly that – a glass woven fabric with a silicon coating on both sides that helps to keep the fabric free from dirt build-up. (N.B. we do still recommend regular cleaning and maintenance to ensure long term performance of the canopy). The glass weave fabric does not burn and is therefore a sensible option for applications in public spaces.
Our in-house engineering team calculated the loads that the canopy would put on the building and steel brackets were designed for fixing into the wall during the construction phase by Vinci. The steel frame of the awning was then bolted to the brackets by Fabric Architecture’s installation team. The canopy itself was fabricated in 12 sections and tensioned into the frame using stainless steel fixings.
