The Challenge

Following a complete rebuild, Scottish Power’s new £100m UK base in Glasgow’s city centre, now accommodates 1,900 more staff. The site was previously the home to the former Strathclyde Regional Council and replaces Scottish Power’s old office locations. Fabric Architecture was approached by a team of Glasgow-based architects who were struggling to find an adaptable solution for a series of ceiling voids on the ground level of the new HQ building. Other products on the market were either no longer being produced or were very limited in their flexibility.

The Solution

Working with Main Contractor Laing O’Rourke, Fabric Architecture produced a high-end yet affordable tensile solution, delivered alongside a bespoke project management service, overseen by Director of Design and Engineering, Nigel Browne. Whilst the panels themselves were simplistic in their look and feel, the nature of the site with all its old and new services and intricate interfaces, was anything but. A constant critical eye was required to ensure the end product remained crisp and uniformed. The company’s previous involvement on projects such as Dublin T2 and Heathrow T2B, provided the architects with an extra level of confidence to work with the in-house design and engineering team at Fab Arc. Over several months they developed the system casting proprietary dies and building test rigs in order to achieve the desired lux levels. Now, 13 large tensile light panels sit flush within the surrounding ceilings, illuminating the ground floor hallways which lead to two main banks of lifts.
