Fabric Ceiling.
The South Glasgow Hospital Campus development involves the expansion of one hospital and the construction of two new hospitals to create one of the largest hospital complexes in Europe. The new South Glasgow University Hospital and Royal Hospital For Sick Children will deliver a truly gold standard of healthcare.
The challenge.
There were two areas that required tensile fabric solutions – the ceiling inside the Hospital’s atrium area and the facade of the “Sanctuary” (a room-within-a-room) also located in this part of the Hospital’s central communal area. The design called for both practical and asthetic solutions to hide services and soften the hard lines of construction.
The solution.
A 240sqm wave-shaped fabric ceiling was designed using Trapeze+ fabric – an inherently flame-retardant stretch polyester fabric by Dazian, to create a smooth and undulating surface. This was framed and suspended from the atrium’s sub-structure and benefited from a perimeter shadow gap with atmospheric up-lighters.
The Sanctuary is an asymmetric cube, a room suspended on stilts to provide a calm and serene environment for staff, patients and visitors. 90sqm of tensile fabric panels, manufactured in Serge Ferrari’s translucent 402 PVC, were fixed to the outside of the Sanctuary and backlit with a series of LED lights. The fabric facade by Fabric Architecture serves to soften the overall look and feel of the cube, which provides a retreat from the fast pace of hospital life outside.
The net result for both areas is a more organic and sympathetic tensile fabric interior, within a practical and busy hospital environment.
